The story of Jim Beam whiskey began in 1795 when Jacob Beam began selling barrels of Old Jake Beam, a corn-rye whiskey recipe created by his father. Seven generations later and with a family legacy of more than 200 years, Jim Beam is true to its taste and remains the #1 bourbon in the world. Made with 51% corn, the whisky has a delightful sweetness, unlikely to be found in other barley and rye whiskies.
Some old mash obtained from the last distillation is added to the mash bill (a mixture of corn, rye and malted barley) to form a sour mash. Rich, iron-free water from Kentucky is responsible to give the bourbon its golden brown colour and also imparts a sweet taste. After adding the yeast, the liquid is distilled twice to achieve the smooth flavours of the ingredients. Unlike other alcoholic spirits where the flavours escape the liquid after distillation, Jim Beam has maximum proof where the bourbon maintains the flavours even after distillation. After the distillation process, the spirit is stored in American White Oak barrels and aged for two years. It imparts a smooth, mellow flavour with hints of vanilla and caramel. Jim Beam makes a great base for Whiskey Sour, Hot Toddy, Julep cocktails.
