Brandy is a highly distilled alcoholic spirit made from fermented fruit juice. A number of fruits like grapes, apricot, blackberry and apples are used in the making of brandy. Brandy is said to have originated in the 16th century when wine was a popular drink in the European regions. However during shipping, due to the limited cargo space, concentrated water was removed from wine. A Dutch trader came up with the idea of adding water upon reaching the destination port. This drink was then called ‘burnt wine’ which was widely accepted by the people for its taste and soon came to be called Brandy.
The main objective while making brandy is to capture the alcohol and agreeable aromas of the underlying fruit, and leave all of the off-tastes and bitter chemicals behind in the waste water. The process of making brandy goes through fermentation, distillation, maturation, blending and bottling. The major difference between cognac and brandy is: cognac is a fine French luxury drink made with white grapes grown in France and is double distilled. Brandy can be enjoyed in a variety of traditional cocktails like the Singer, the Alexander and the Sidecar.
